چکیده

We present a technique for deriving predictions for the run times of parallel applications from the run times of “similar” applications that have executed in the past. The novel aspect of our work is the use of search techniques to determine those application characteristics that yield the best definition of similarity for the purpose of making predictions. We use four workloads recorded from parallel computers at Argonne National Laboratory, the Cornell Theory Center, and the San Diego Supercomputer Center to evaluate the effectiveness of our approach. We show that on these workloads our techniques achieve predictions that are between 14 and 60 percent better than those achieved by other researchers; our approach achieves mean prediction errors that are between 41 and 65 percent of mean application run times.

Predictive Adaptation for Service Level Agreements on the Grid

Users of Grid systems often need to attach Quality of Service (QoS) information such as time or performance constraints to guarantee timely execution of their application. Grid resources have varying quality and reliability and can easily be swamped by competing applications. If this coincides with the users execution their results may be delayed. In support of this we propose a Service Level A...

Predicting Run Times of Applications Using Rough Sets

Application run time estimation techniques are used in diverse domains including scheduling algorithms, estimating queue times in parallel computing environments and as performance metrics in web services. In this paper we present a novel rough sets approach to estimate application run times. We present experimental results that validate our hypothesis that rough sets provide an intuitively sou...

Evaluation of Execution Time of Mathematical Library Functions Based on Historical Performance Information

The paper presents the concept of a mechanism for predicting the execution time of mathematical library functions. The technique bases on the analysis of historical information concerning the performance of previous executions. The main application of the proposed mechanism is the prediction of the execution time of mathematical library functions in the Grid RPC systems. It can also be used in ...

Supporting the Optimisation of Distributed Data Mining by Predicting Application Run Times

There is an emerging interest in optimisation strategies for distributed data mining in order to improve response time. Optimisation techniques operate by first identifying factors that affect the performance in distributed data mining, computing/assigning a “cost” to those factors for alternate scenarios or strategies and then choosing a strategy that involves the least cost. In this paper we ...

ScoPred-Scalable User-Directed Performance Prediction Using Complexity Modeling and Historical Data

Using historical information to predict future runs of parallel jobs has shown to be valuable in job scheduling. Trends toward more flexible jobscheduling techniques such as adaptive resource allocation, and toward the expansion of scheduling to grids, make runtime predictions even more important. We present a technique of employing both a user’s knowledge of his/her parallel application and hi...
